If the moon is rising, AND it is night time (since the moon also rises during the day--in which case the moon in your art is correct), the sun must below the horizon. The quarter moon in the beginning of the month, is up at setset--so this picture would be correct for moonset, about midnight--in which case, South is to the left in the picture. On the other hand, the quarter moon rises in the last part of the month around midnight--and in the East--in which case South is to the right in your art. I love the clarity and quality of the color.
